1.    For more than 40 years, the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) has been the standard-bearer for professionalism in fundraising.  Learn more about AFP, its activities, people and how you can be involved.

 

2.    AFP Calgary, with more than 375 members, is a great place to network and keep up to date on current issues.  It also offers monthly luncheons, work­shops, and professional development opportunities.  Active membership is $300 annually.  Note, new members are eligible to applying for a new member discount.

  

4.    The Canadian Revenue Agency (CRA) registers qualifying organizations as charities, gives technical advice on operating a charity and handles audit and compliance activities.  Registered charities are required to file an annual return and must meet certain requirements of the Income Tax Act concerning their expenditure and activities.

 

5.    Imagine Canada, formerly The Canadian Centre for Philanthropy, provides information on the charitable sector including government decisions, policy issues, research findings and statistics.  It also includes The National Survey of Giving, Volunteering and Participating and back issues of Front & Centre.  It also produces the Canadian Directory to Foundations and Grants. 

 

6.    Charity Village Canada's is a supersite for the nonprofit sector hosting upto 3,000 pages of news, jobs, information and resources for executives, staffers, donors, and volunteers.

 

7.    This link lists some of the more common questions people have about the Alberta Lottery Fund, as well as the Community Facility Enhancement Program (CFEP) and the Community Initiatives Program (CIP).  For more information on any of the other five lottery-funded programs and foundations, please see the Applying for a Grant page for contact information.

 

8.    Canadian FundRaiser eNews is another free e-newsletter with regular articles on volunteer management and working in the nonprofit sector.

 

9.    Canadian Association is an excellent, free e-newsletter published by consultant Wayne Amundson.  There are often articles on HR issues.

 

10.  GAIN website on gaming has lots of info on casino, raffles, etc.

 

11.  CanadianOutcomes Research Institute in Calgary offers assistance in outcome measurement and evaluation tools.

 

12.  Alberta Community Development (Government of Alberta) provides an excellent set of reference material regarding Board Development.  Co-sponsored by The Muttart Foundation, they are available on-line.

 

13.  CentrePoint has access to websites, papers, articles and current materials on a great variety of topics related to the non-profit sector.  Different materials are of interest to different audiences, including different ages and stages of agency life.  Please contact the Centre (403-517-8600) to ask about other sources and reference material.  There are too many to list in this one summary.

14. GlobalPhilanthropy.ca assists Canadian individuals, non-profits and charities to understand their legal and ethical obligations when operating a charity.  It contains many very good articles on some of the pertinent legal issues related operating a charity and is written in an easy to read format.
