One of the fundamental concepts within fund development is stewardship: creating long term relationships with your donors.

Begin by identifying your potential donors.  Slowly prepare them before you ask for a gift.  Inform the donor about who you are, your projects and your importance in society.  Get the donor’s interest with a good story.  Involve the donor by inviting them to tour your facility, attend an event or become a volunteer.  All this will lead to an investment in your organization but it doesn’t stop there.  Now you must integrate the donor into your organizations’ family by keeping them informed and involved.  This is called donor stewardship – i.e. ensuring they are kept informed and abreast regarding how their donation was used, what benefits and outcomes it provided, who benefited etc. For more information on this subject, please refer to the section on Stewardship.
